Significance: "The Suffolk County Jail has major national architectural significance as the prime institutional example of the Boston Granite Style of the mid-19th century. The design was executed by one of the foremost exponents of the style, Gridley J.F. Bryant." In addition, it significantly advanced the "Auburn Plan" philosophy for prison design. The jail became the prototype design which would greatly influence prison design throughout the United States and abroad.
