Significance: The building was erected in 1913 as a passenger depot for the Great Northern Railroad. From the date of its construction the clock tower represented a prominent Helena landmark and its location at the base of the Last Chance Gulch tied the structure to the heart of the city's commercial district. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s played an important role in the settlement and industrialization of Montana and Helena. The Great Northern Depot linked the state capitol with Minneapolis to the east and Seattle to the west.
