Significance: The Manual Log House was built sometime between 1826 and 1860. It is the last remaining cabin of the Huggart Settlement, the earliest black settlement in northern Indiana. The settlement was unusual in that it was rural and the residents apparently integrated into the rest of the farm community. The children attended the school and everyone went to the same church. The enclave existed until the 1890's when residents moved into the nearby city of South Bend. ... The Log House is currently used as a maple sugar house. The trees in the surrounding nine acre camp have been tapped for over 100 years.
