Significance: Building 271 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building 271 is highly significant as the earliest of the "curtain-wall" industrial buildings at Mare Island, a distinct building type found at Mare Island and other naval shipyards. Built in 1918, Building 271 is an extremely early example of this building type, whether in a civilian or a Navy context. It is also of interest because it is literally connected to a series of early brick shops, making the combined building an interesting case study in the evolution of industrial design.
