Significance: Building H1 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. The building is an excellent example of Beaux Arts classicism, favored in its time for prominent public buildings such as this. It is alone, however, among the architectural specimens at Mare Island; no other building on the base utilizes the same architectural vocabulary of this building. The uniqueness of the design is understandable, however, in the context of where the building was constructed. The Naval Hospital area of Mare Island has always been quite isolated, functionally and architecturally. The distinctive design and isolated locale for Building H1 illustrates that fact.
