Significance: The Southern Pacific Railroad Shasta Route, built as the California and Oregon Railroad and the Central Pacific Railroad between Roseville, California and Portland, Oregon was the first thrust north of the Central Pacific Railroad to tap the Oregon market. Begun in 1863 as the California and Oregon Railroad, the line was finally completed in 1887. Completion of the Natron Cutoff in 1927 saw the north end of the Shasta Route pulled back to Black Butte, California. A final change occurred 1938-1942 when construction of Shasta Dam required replacement of twenty-six miles of the original alignment with thirty-two miles of new railroad. For the purpose of the current project, the Shasta Route was found likely to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places at the state level of significance under Criterion A for its significance in engineering, transportation history, and the economic development of California and Oregon, and in the development of the West, and under criterion B for its association with E.H. Harriman. The Shasta Route's period of significance is 1863 to 1945, from the beginning of construction in 1863, through the years of its role in the economic development of California and Oregon, to the conclusion of the railroad's achievements in World War II. As contributors to the overall historic property, the route's Common Standard bridges over the Sacramento River were also found to meet criterion C, representing a type, period, and method of construction. Built in 1898, with new approach spans in 1929, Bridge Number 210.52 is the oldest extant swing bridge in California, and is a contributive element of this property.

1. West end of Bridge Number 210.52, oblique contextual view to northwest showing the downstream side, 90mm lens. The long trestle approach to the west end of this bridge precluded safe accessibility for axial photography of the west portal.
2. West end of Bridge Number 210.52, oblique view to southwest showing the upstream side, 90mm lens.
3. Oblique view of downstream side of Bridge Number 210.52, view to northwest, 90mm lens.
4. Downstream side of Bridge Number 210.52, view to north showing the 1998 swing span and circular center pier, 90mm lens. This photo was made from an adjacent highway bridge.
5. Oblique view of downstream side of Bridge Number 210.52, view to northeast, 135mm lens. The swing span dates from 1898, while the approach spans date from 1929.
6. East portal of Bridge Number 210.52, contextual view to east, 210mm lens. This structure underscores the inconsistencies with the railroad's use of 'east' and 'west' as opposed to actual direction; in this case the railroad 'east' end of the bridge faces actual west.
7. East portal of Bridge Number 210.52, view to east, 210mm lens. The span nearest the camera is one of the 1929 approach spans, while the 1898 swing span is visible just beyond.
8. East portal of 1898 swing span of Bridge Number 210.52, view to east, 210mm lens. Note the difference in the latticed portal strut as compared to that of the 1929 approach span in the previous photo.
9. Oblique view of upstream side of Bridge Number 210.52, view to southeast, 135mm lens.
10. Detail, axial view of underfloor of one of the western 1929 approach spans of Bridge Number 210.52, view to west, 135mm lens. Visible are bottom chords, diagonal bottom laterals, longitudinal stringers, and transverse floor beams.
11. Detail, circular center pier of 1898 swing span and remnants of operating machinery of Bridge Number 210.52, view to north, 380mm lens.
12. Detail, remnants of operating machinery on 1898 swing span of Bridge Number 210.52, view to east-southeast, 210mm lens.
13. Detail, portal connection point of 1898 swing span, Bridge Number 210.52, view to northeast, 210mm lens. Visible are the latticed portal strut at right, inclined end post, vertical hanger, top chord at left, paired diagonal eyebars, and one end of a top lateral.
14. Detail, typical approach span fixed bearing atop stone masonry pier, view to northwest, 210mm lens.
