Significance: Although the Hetch Hetchy Valley was known even earlier than the Yosemite Valley, no road reached the isolated valley until 1915. The road was built as a roadbed for the construction railway for the O'Shaughnessy Dam, the principal structure of the controversial Hetch Hetchy Reservoir project. The railway was converted to a park highway in 1925.
