It is the only remaining house of San Francisco country squires who were first to establish homes on the peninsula while commuting via the newly built railroad. This house is typical of their various dignified and comfortable homes, representing a balance between distinctive affluence of the owners and their Yankee practicability. It was built for Commodore James Thomas Watkins, captain of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company.
