Significance: This structure includes a lock against the left bank with inside chamber dimensions of 110 by 600 feet, a maximum lift of 64 feet, and a spillway controlled by 14 individually-operated tainter gates. The Holt Lake extends upstream 19 miles to the John Hollis Bankhead Lock and Dam. Because of its scenic beauty and its proximity to Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, the 3,200 acre lake is a popular recreational attraction. The lock was opened for navigation in 1966, replacing four old locks and dams built in the early 1900s. At the time of the construction of the lock and spillway, Alabama Power Company built a powerhouse against the north bank as part of the dam.
