Significance: The Alaska Nike Hercules Missile Batteries were the only Nike antiaircraft installations in the United States that fired missiles from their tactical sites; the other Nike batteries fired practice rounds from a Missile Firing Range. The Alaska Nike Sites were additionally unique in terms of engineering accomplishments designing a system that would function in subarctic conditions.
