Building/structure dates:
1768 initial construction
Significance: All indications are that this is a pre-Revolutionary house. It is built on land originally owned by Edmund Fanning. It is an excellent example of "Piedmont" architecture and is especially notable for its fine double twin chimneys. It has been associated with numerous important early figures: William Duffy, the attorney; the Rev. John Knox Witherspoon, and Hugh Waddell. It is sometimes known as "the Old Postoffice." It provides the setting for much of Sara Beaumont Kennedy's Revolutionary novel, Joscelyn Cheshire.
