Title: DE ORBIS SITU LIBRI TRES,ACCURATISSIME EMENDATI...
Description: This atlas contains the text of the Roman geographer Pomponius Mela and his 1st century description of the world's geography. The world map bound with this book was drawn by the French cartographer Oronce Fine. His map takes the then novel shape of a double cordiform - a map projecting the world in the shape of two hearts. Not only did Fine use the label AMERICA to describe South America, he also illustrated the land to its South with an early view of TERRA AUSTRALIS (Antartica). To represent the opposite end of the world, Fine drew a northern pole comprised of an island group opposed to the frozen ocean we know it to be today.
