Locate My Family BETA
We designed the Locate My Family tool to help genealogists access the content on Historic Map Works.
Sometimes the sheer number of relatives listed in a genealogist's family prohibits them from running a separate location search when visiting our map collection. To have a few thousand individuals listed on a family tree is not uncommon and considering that many of those individuals are associated with multiple geographic locations and multiple life events such as: birth places, school locations, marriage locations, cemetery locations, ect., the number of locations quickly adds up.
With this in mind it soon becomes apparent that typing all that information into Historic Map Works as a separate location search would be time prohibitive. Enter Locate My Family.
From this page, users can upload a GEDCOM v5.5 compatible family tree file. This will allow our website to plot the various locations listed within that particular family tree and cross reference them with the relevant maps within the Historic Map Works collection in both our new Historic Earth™ viewer and our traditional Zoomify map viewer. Combining the information from your family tree with our map collection is a powerful new way to visualize your family's migration across the world.
No information is saved here at Historic Map Works from your family tree, nor is any new information written in your original GEDCOM file. In future releases, we may allow users to share their information with other members and perhaps even save user generated notes for specific areas on our historic maps.
We've provided a link to a sample family tree below if you wish to experiment with the Locate My Family tool before uploading your own information.
