The court house is now the town offices and the jail is now the library for Simcoe but the exteriors haven changed much in all those years.

Was Clark township named after an individual? Also, what date was the township started?

This is supposedly a 1701 map showing the island of Clipperton that was officially claimed in 1711 and only discovered by and named after Clipperton, a privateer, in 1704.

Eric According to the Osher Map Library this is indeed a 1701 map. I can find no exact date of Clippertons discovery, only that the island may have been used as a base for his raids on shipping but no evidence exists. Probably based on a 1614 chart of Dutch captain and discoverer Adriaen Block. A unique map because the area New Netherland was claimed for the whole region from Delaware to French territory, including New England.

Claudius Ptolemy lived in the second century, is this map drawn from his earlier maps?

You are correct, this map is from the mid 1500s and not from 150 AD which is when Ptolemy lived, but more on that later. If you are interested, we have 5 complete copies of Ptolemys Geography (the atlas this map was taken from) in our Rare Book Library. You can view them here within our 3d flip book viewer: http://www.historicmapworks.com/RareBookLibrary/ Unfortunately, no known example of Ptolemys original maps still exist, however around the late 1300s and early 1400s, European scholars rediscovered Ptolemys texts and attempted to draw their own interpretations of his maps from his descriptions. These were published as their own editions of his Geography with the inclusion of contemporary maps for areas Ptolemy couldnt have known about. Take a look at our Rare Book Library and compare the various maps in the various Ptolemaic atlases. Gerard Mercators edition from 1584 is thought to be especially faithful to Ptolomeys original intentions.

What amazes me with this atlas is how it shows all the control points, switches, towers, and catenary bridge locations of the railroad tracks - NYNH&H AND NYW&B railroad. This is a really neat thing to have, being a NYW&B buff.

I have in my posession a 1871 F.W. Beers ORIGINAL Atlas of Indiana County, Pennsylvania with signatures passing the Atlas down to me. As far as I know another copy was lost in the fire that took place at the Indiana Courthouse and another apparently lost. Could you please tell me the value of this Atlas. It has all pages with corner wear, original binding. Any help would be very much appreciated.

John you have a wonderful atlas. That particular atlas is one of the few Beers I know of that put an illustration on the same page as a map. This was fairly common practice on the earlier wall maps, but not so much in the later atlases.brbrAs you might imagine, prices fluctuate all the time, but a good start is to check the online auction sites for previous sales as well as asking rare book dealers in the Indiana County area for their advice.

who was wm.langhorst, i found a bottle in my yard that has wm.langhorst, silverton ohio on it.it also has one pint liquid on it as well.

My mother grew up in Silverton, Ohio. I have a milk bucket that says Wm. Langhorst on it. My mother passed away in 2005, but I recall her telling me that the milk bucket was from the Langhorst Dairy somewhere in the area. I believe they delivered milk to my grandparents. The milk was put in the bucket. My grandparents moved to Silverton in 1926. My grandmother lived there until she passed in 1984. My guess is the dairy was in operation sometime around the 40s, but that is just a guess. My mothers brother is still living. I am sure he has more info. I will have to ask.

My family ancestors are the McCalls, the estate of which show up on this map of Beverly Township, Ontario. Not sure if this is my McCall family. They were in Beverly in 1830 for a few years. So, this map may show me a new path.

I can view the 1872 Connellsville City map, but I cannot find the Connellsville Township map. Is that available to view?

Looking at the index of the map and the towns it contains, I believe at this point in history Connellsville was considered a city and not a township.

The actual name of this is Condon Ferry. The fellow that operated the Ferry was Wilbur Condon also known as Wild Goose Bill Condon.

This map was printed ca. 1930. In 1900 Olmos Park, which is shown, didn exist. But a main keys are, an arrow is shown "to Randolph Aviation Field". Since airplanes didn exist in 1900, it is unlikely Randolph did either. (dedicated in 1930). The new river channel cut downtown completed about 1929 as was an extension of Hildebrandt Ave. They are shown. Aside, I have this map in my collection. If you got this from the state of Texas, it is shown by the state incorrectly.

Its interesting to note the penciled in dates and purchase amounts of the properties ajacent to Tyler State Park - These properties were bought by the US Army and soon after they installed the Richboro NIKE AJAX missle launcher and control bases here.

Images within this particular atlas have the Image Quality attribute of (I)nformational which means that they were scanned from a microfilm or a microfiche plate as opposed to those images on the site which have the Image Quality designation of (H)igh Quality which means they were primary scans made directly from the old bound book itself. In this instance, the microfilm was sourced from the Library of Congress and we scanned it into the collection last year.

I would like to know about the alley ways in Galatia IL. Who owns them? Are they the responcibility of the adjoining propery owners? We have 2 lots with 2 alleys and the propery is for sale.

This is Middleton, Oregon. It was on maps as early as 1858, which was way before the town of Sherwood was established. It was platted as seen here, but as a town it was all but gone by the 1930s.

I grew up in Baldwin in the 1950s and remember skating on Lofts Pond and and feeding the ducks at Silver Lake. What a beautiful small town it was, and even in the 1950s there were glimpses of what life was like in the early 20th century.

Although the map is labeled "Troy, NY"......there is nothing that resembles the Troy NY where I grew up....except the Hudson River!

This is our house! We are so happy to find a picture of what it looked like back when it was built. The house itself looks nearly the same now. However, much of the surroundings have changed.

This map is great for the rail history buff. One can see where the Chicago & Northwestern RR ran from the town of Spring Valley, north (out of the map) to DeKalb and then Belvidere IL in order to deliver coal.

Is it possible to find this original book as a whole/Spine original and no reprints.
