My family ancestors are the McCalls, the estate of which show up on this map of Beverly Township, Ontario. Not sure if this is my McCall family. They were in Beverly in 1830 for a few years. So, this map may show me a new path.

I can view the 1872 Connellsville City map, but I cannot find the Connellsville Township map. Is that available to view?

Looking at the index of the map and the towns it contains, I believe at this point in history Connellsville was considered a city and not a township.

The actual name of this is Condon Ferry. The fellow that operated the Ferry was Wilbur Condon also known as Wild Goose Bill Condon.

This map was printed ca. 1930. In 1900 Olmos Park, which is shown, didn exist. But a main keys are, an arrow is shown "to Randolph Aviation Field". Since airplanes didn exist in 1900, it is unlikely Randolph did either. (dedicated in 1930). The new river channel cut downtown completed about 1929 as was an extension of Hildebrandt Ave. They are shown. Aside, I have this map in my collection. If you got this from the state of Texas, it is shown by the state incorrectly.

Its interesting to note the penciled in dates and purchase amounts of the properties ajacent to Tyler State Park - These properties were bought by the US Army and soon after they installed the Richboro NIKE AJAX missle launcher and control bases here.

Images within this particular atlas have the Image Quality attribute of (I)nformational which means that they were scanned from a microfilm or a microfiche plate as opposed to those images on the site which have the Image Quality designation of (H)igh Quality which means they were primary scans made directly from the old bound book itself. In this instance, the microfilm was sourced from the Library of Congress and we scanned it into the collection last year.

Wonderful map protrayal of layout of RC Church school, convent and rectory in plate 180: Our Lady of Good Council. Address can best be desribed as located on a plot of land between Putnam and Ralph Avenues, near the corners of Ralph Ave and Patchen Ave.

This is a very useful map for identifying the boundaries of election districts or wards in 1890.

This is Middleton, Oregon. It was on maps as early as 1858, which was way before the town of Sherwood was established. It was platted as seen here, but as a town it was all but gone by the 1930s.

I grew up in Baldwin in the 1950s and remember skating on Lofts Pond and and feeding the ducks at Silver Lake. What a beautiful small town it was, and even in the 1950s there were glimpses of what life was like in the early 20th century.

Although the map is labeled "Troy, NY"......there is nothing that resembles the Troy NY where I grew up....except the Hudson River!

This is our house! We are so happy to find a picture of what it looked like back when it was built. The house itself looks nearly the same now. However, much of the surroundings have changed.

This map is great for the rail history buff. One can see where the Chicago & Northwestern RR ran from the town of Spring Valley, north (out of the map) to DeKalb and then Belvidere IL in order to deliver coal.

Is it possible to find this original book as a whole/Spine original and no reprints.

Based on this map and comparison with the 1947 maps, State Trunk Highway 30 was relocated between 1947 and 1954. Interstate Highway 94 was later built over parts of State Trunk Highway 30 east of the junction with County Trunk Highway N.

This web page has a button to turn off/on rotate, but how do you rotate the image? I haven found that button yet. Whats the point of having rotate on or off feature if you can rotate the image?

When you click the ROTATE ON or THE ROTATE OFF button, two new button (with arrows pointing clockwise and counterclockwise) will appear on the bottom Zoomify controls next to the + and - buttons.

Does this map of Calais/ Robbinston Maine display the names and locations of old cenetaries?

Yes, it does show where cemeteries are / were located in 1881, but it does not list their names only a symbol (green parcels with the abbreviation Cem.) next to them. For a full list of cemeteries in Maine (or other states) try our new BROWSE by POINT OF INTEREST feature by going to the BROWSE tab on top of the screen and then North America, and choosing the state of interest, and then choose cemeteries as the the category (or schools, hospitals, ect.) and you will then be shown a list of cemeteries in that state. Choosing Maine for example will return 15 pages of cemeteries and the maps in our collection that cover them. Good luck with your research.

I also have a framed mirror map which is sized at 22"x32". The colours are different to yours as mine is teal colour around the people, pale gold around the edge and the ladies dress at the bottom (as well as other things) is red. I am presuming the frame is original although the front of the frame has been painted green. The board at the back of the frame has made in England stamped on it. The approximate 20,000 acre area around Brick Meeting House (now called Calvert, MD) was originally called the Nottingham Lotts. It was the epicenter of the land dispute between William Penn and Lord Calvert that eventually resulted in the Mason-Dixon Line Survey. The M-D Survey proved 90% of the land on which Penns Quaker settlers had built homes, mills and farms beginning as early as 1702 was in MD, not PA. After the M-D Survey, the MD Legislature passed an Act permitting residents to keep the land if they proved they were in "peaceable possession" of it. Usually a local Justice of the Peace had to swear to this effect. The properties were surveyed c. 1785, but it took as long as 20 years for landowners to receive the final titles to their lands.

This is a very interesting view of Newburgh, NY. The unmarked road running off into the distance from right to left appears to be present-day Broadway. The road branching off of it looks like South Plank Road. The other side of the map should show North Plank road, but I can only see the left side of the map

Yes, many of the images on the site which depict watermarks will also show the accompanying map content in reverse as we try to photograph each watermark in its proper orientation. A link to the full, non-reversed map can be found by following the ATLAS hyperlink on the page which allows you to zoom in and out of the watermark.
For those who are interested in the history of these maps, a large portion of the pre-1800 content within the antiquarian map collection have watermarks which appear when the map is held up to a light. By comparing the photographs of these watermarks found on the HMW site to those which appear in books containing lookup tables with drawings of known watermarks such as "MONUMENTA CHARTAE PAPYRACEAE - WATERMARKS" or an online visual database such as the Piccard collection http://www.piccard-online.de/struktur.php?anzeigeKlassi=&klassi=&sprache=en researchers can identify the person or firm that made the paper that the map was printed on. Ultimately, knowing who made the paper and when, allows a more accurate dating and understanding the map itself.

Never heard of Millburn, and I grew up in the Town of Lisle.

Another great SC map showing "Linder" in Spartanburg County, SC. This family apparently had a community named after it from about 1815 into the 1850s when the name disappeared from subsequent maps.

The "New Subway to be Constructed" under Lafayette Avenue is the current A, C, and G trains. At the intersection of Lafayette and Fulton, the G splits off and stays under Lafayette while the A and C are the main line under Fulton.

My family was one of the earlier settlers of pittsfeild Twp, Carlos Avery and his house that he built known as the "Old Brick" is still standing.

What a wonderful find and quite a rare one at that as very few of the illustrations found within these old atlases were colored. Of the 20,000 to 30,000 within our collection, I would probably say that less than 50 were were produced with color. As with the maps, these were hand colored at the publishers. FYI: If you decide to order a map or gift item made with this image we will remove the brown marks left over from the old tape as a matter of course.

I have seen Birds Eye Views listed for anywhere from $500 to $10,000 depending on many factors. Early panoramic maps of large metropolitan areas certainly attract a lot of interest. You might be able to find more info about values one of the links listed on www.MapHistory.info

Congratulations! Have you found your g-g-grandfathers name on a map within that atlas yet? You may find it of interest to know that the map publishers sometime drew little houses next to a persons name on the accompanying atlas for those atlas subscribers who paid to have a sketch drawn of their farmstead. This allowed their door-to-door salesmen to identify who their best customers were the next time they published an atlas for that county. In addition to his name on a map, you may also find a biography or a mention of him under the Histories or Directories tabs for that atlas. Good luck with the research.

i have one of these maps that has been handed down from my granpa to me .. and i was wondering how to tell if its one of the origonals ?? it does have a little water stain on it, but its spent all of its life in a glassed frame and hung on the wall.

Paul Messenger Lewis is my great-uncle, by marriage, and I have inherited some of his things including a lithograph of Nathan R. Lewis residence, the same one. Do you know of the relationship between Nathan and Paul?

Elizabeth, Nathan R Lewis is my great great grandfather. I have the lithograph also and over 30 years ago went and took a picture of the barn and house which burned downed and was recontructed. I am in the process of working on the geneology and will share anything I come up with. Have not come across Paul.

Definitive evidence that Spain explored as far north as Mendocino in North America by 1652- Contrary to public opinion.

There was a charming illustrated series of these books showing all the main valleys and towns of Northern California. There is one on Napa in the private collection of Magnus Hienzsch of Winters, CA. One of Sonoma is on display at the Vallejo State Park in the old barn in Sonoma, CA.

On some of the properties is a little drawn box with circles in it...what does that mean?

Plate 10 is missing from original atlas

Unfortunately, as IT Admin pointed out, that plate is missing from the original 1942 atlas - most likely it is hanging on someones wall. However, we do have other property owner maps which show that area. Centennial is off FM 123 and CR 322 in Eastern Panola County. Johns Gin Road is in Caddo Parish, LA.

I am trying to locate a colord school and church in Deberry Texas between 1890-1930?

I am interested in learning about a lodge that existed on long lake in the early 1900s. The property was owned on this map by O. Gudvangen (sp). From what I was told by the current landowners (Dean and Cora Dversdal) there was a lodge and a tunnel that went out to the lake with a pier and a dance hall. Some of the cabins still exist on the property on the straight river. Any information, or if you can point me in the right direction I would surely appreciate it. Thank you very much. This is actually South Milwaukee, Wis., looking east toward Lake Michigan. South Milwaukee is a town just south of Milwaukee, as the name implies. This looks to be the old BE (Bucyrus Erie) plant.

Rumor has it that the Souix Indians were in the Wind River area, not the Shashone and the Arapahoe Indians?? I assume this map is right, and author Louis Lamoure goofed....

Stephen and Olive Greenough lived in Colchester, VT in 1861,, During Civil War they moved to Ingham Twp., Ingham Co., MI. Their son, Milon, was member of Union Army & discharged in 1865.

I grew up on the Far View Stock Farm. On this map, Fred Wittick, at Sec 34, SE 1/4 and Sec 35, S 1/2. My dad, Guy Jacobs, bought the land in 1940. I was born in 1948. My brother, Francis, and his wife, Terryl, operate the farm today.

My uncle, Jacobus Q. Jacobs (1889-1964), settled on Section 2, NE1/4. In 1920 he married Goldie Davidson (1900-1938) and raised a family of 11 children.

Jacobus Q. "Jake" Jacobs, hosted several of his many brothers on this farm, immigrants from Den Bommel, Netherlands, including my father. http://jqjacobs.net/family/ The farm 1 mile south was purchased by Adrianus Jacobs, and later also farmed by Gerardus Jacobs, then by my brother Bernard. Both farms are now owned by grandchildren of Jake.
