Boston 1722 Captain John Bonner Survey - Version B, Boston 1722 Captain John Bonner Survey, Massachusetts
| | | |
| |
Perhaps the most notable map of pre-revolution Boston, the John Bonner survey map appears in many incarnations.
The two versions in this group, represent the same image presented in both high and low contrasts for increased legibility.
Customers wishing to order a Fine-Art reproduction or who wish to see the map overlaid a modern satellite view in our Historic Earth Map Viewer should choose Version A. It is interesting to note that this is the only example HMW has come across where the British spelling of Harbour was Americanized at a later date to read Harbor - a fascinating modification which sets this map apart from other renditions of this rare work.
When viewed within the Historic Earth overlay viewer, researches can see for the first time, how much infill was required to create the footprint of modern Boston. An example of a major land recovery project was the systematic filling in of the Mill Pond with gravel from Beacon Hill to create the area now known as the Bulfinch Triangle which includes North Station and the sports arena TD Banknorth Garden.
Likewise, later development buried the original waterfront location of the Boston Tea Party which means visitors to the historic plaque commemorating the event (located at the current intersection of Purchase and Congress Streets) are now left wondering why the site is so far away from the water.
Whether ordered as an attractive printed gift for the history buff or as a digital download for research, this attractive map is bound to become one of HMWs most requested images. - HMW Admin
