Founded by Benjamin Franklin, The American Philosophical Society (APS) is one of the country's foremost scholarly organizations. Located next to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the APS has encouraged the exchange of ideas and the growth of intellectual inquiry for over a quarter of a century. Many of the maps within the APS library are one of a kind and not to be found in any other archive.
The APS library is particularly known for its collections pertaining to American history to 1860, Native American linguistics and ethnology, and the history of science. Likewise, it is from these important fields that the APS map collection draws its highlights.
A list of APS members reads like a who's who of notable figures in science and the arts. Early members included George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Rush, James Madison, and John Marshall. Later members included John J. Audubon, Robert Fulton, Charles Darwin, Thomas Edison, Alexander von Humboldt, Louis Pasteur, Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, George C. Marshall, Linus Pauling, Marie Curie, and Margaret Mead.
Historic Map Works is truly fortunately to have been able to license these images and make them available for your research. The variety of cartographic materials in the APS collection is truly unique in both scope and sheer variety of topics represented. From manuscript maps drawn at the dawn of our country's founding to the most detailed wall and property ownership maps of Philadelphia, the APS map collection is a true treasure to all historians.
It is worth remembering that the maps offered below are only a small representation of the materials which exist in the APS library in Philadelphia. Historic Map Works encourages anyone interested in learning more about the APS, its collections, or its current endeavors to visit www.amphilsoc.org

D. Graham... one of the commissioners for surveying and exploring the N. E. boundary of the U.S. U.S. Topographical Engineers. ; Creator: Graham, J. D. (James Duncan), 1799-1865; Fairfax, Wilson McC.; Date: [1840/41]; Publisher: Washington: Hass lith.: [1841].; Contributor: Haas, P.; Description: ; Notes: In presenting this document, I beg to call the attention of the Society to the strong contrast, which will appear on a comparison, between the aspect of the country traversed by this due north line as there developed, and that exhibited by the profile of Colonel Bouchette, the British surveyor under the 5th article of the Treaty of Ghent, derived from his surveys of that line and his barometric measurements upon it in the years 1817 & '18.The direction of the meridian line whose profile or vertical section is now offered to the notice of the Society, was obtained from numerous astronomical observations, fully verified, with a transit instrument having a telescope of 43 inches focal length. It will be perceived on reference thereto that the meridian, thus traced, does not meet with any highland or elevation whatever in passing Mars Hill, but on the contrary that it passes the base of that eminence considerably to the eastward, and at a depression nowhere less that 12 feet below the level of the base of the monument which was erected to mark the source of the River St. Croix.... It may be well to remark that the base of this monument is surrounded (unless at seasons of extreme drought) by the water constituting the extreme source of that river [Archives. J. D. Graham to APS, 28 March 1844. Minutes. Proc , vol. 4, p. 53. Donation Book].Librarian George Ord was notified 22 June 1844 that W. R. Palmer had received these maps for the Society [Archives. W. R. North America | North America 1774 | Full Title: A map of the British Empire in North America; by Samuel Dunn.; Creator: Dunn, Samuel; Date: 1774 January 10; Publisher: Unattributed; Contributor: London: Robert Sayer: 1774 [10 January 1774].; Description: Early map of North America, land owned by the British Empire.; Notes: Former Secretary of the Treasury, Albert Gallatin, wrote 7 November 1828 requesting the loan of particular maps for use in settling the Northeast Boundary Dispute with Great Britain. Secretary John Vaughan acquired some for him from Samuel Hazard and the "City Library" as well as some from the Society's library. Gallatin wrote that "in every case where we have but one engraved copy of a Map, we are bound to deliver a manuscript copy to the British Minister here on 1st of January next." He stated that the map he wanted more than any other, is in truth the same map, but bearing on the face of it the date of 1776 to 1782 (or 1777 I believe) and not having the word "United States" on it or in it. The title is in substance as follows vizt:A new and correct map of North America with the West Indian Islands, divided according to the last treaty of peace concluded at Paris 10th February 1763, corrected from the original materials of Govr. Pownal M.P. Sayer & Bennet 1777. But it may vary a little in the said title & been any date from 1775 to 1782 [Archives].Vaughan shipped the maps 16 November, and Gallatin retained two which belonged to the Society [22 November 1828, Archives]. As "U.S. Agent for the N.E. boundary" he signed for these two on 26 December: "Sayer & Bennett's U.States-Feby 1783" and "Dunn's British Empire 1774." They were to be "laid before the Arbiter" and they would be "returned, replaced, or, in case of unavoidable accident, compensated for by the United States" [Archives, Receipt]. He returned the unused maps 2 January 1829 and sent his "thanks and those of the Government for your zealous and useful services on this important occasion" [Archives].These maps were not returned by 1843 so the members instructed Secretary George Ord on 15 December to recover them. Ord wrote immediately to Gallatin who replied 19 December, explaining what happened to them:Sayer & Bennet's United States, delivered to the British Minister at Washington, as part of the evidence to be laid before the Arbiter and which, in conformity with the Convention, the U. States were bound to communicate to the British Government on the 31st Dec[emb]er 1828. - cannot be recovered. Dunn's British Empire, laid before the Arbiter. All the maps laid before the King of Holland were bound together at Washington. That Atlas was, I understand, brought back from Holland by Mr. Treble and must be in the Department of State [Archives].On 18 May 1852, Acting Secretary of State William Hunter returned the Sayer and Bennett map. It had been found "this morning" and Hunter hastened "to restore it to your Society" [Archives].The Dunn map was returned 15 December 1852 by Secretary of State Edward Everett. He wrote member C. B. Trego that the map was returned by direction of the President "with the thanks of this Department for its use" [Archives]. United States | Mid Atlantic 1750c | Full Title: [Middle Atlantic states, showing rivers and mountains and location of sea shells on the tops of the mountains].; Creator: Bartram, John, 1699-1777; Date: [1750s]; Publisher: Unattributed; Contributor: Unattributed; Description: Manuscript map detailing locations of sea shells on mountain tops.; Notes: As early as 1741, John Bartram sent some fossil sea shells to Sir Hans Sloan; other shells were sent to his London friend Peter Collinson in 1742. He wrote to Collinson in 1743 or 1744 that he had observed such fossils everywhere, "even on the top of the mountain that separates the waters of Susquehanna and St. Lawrence." (William Darlington, Memorials of John Bartram and Humphry Marshall [Philadelphia: 1849], p. 169.) Bartram was used to making rough maps of his travels and he made no pretense of being a competent surveyor. He apologized to Collinson for a map which he said was "Clumsily done, having neither proper instruments nor convenient time" since he was drawing by the early light of dawn or by candlelight. Franklin wrote his friend Jared Eliot on 16 July 1747 of Bartram's discoveries: The great Apalachian Mountains, which run from York [Hudson] River back of these Colonies to the Bay of Mexico, show in many Places near the highest Parts of them, Strata Sea Shells, in some Places the marks of them are in the solid Rocks. 'Tis certainly the Wreck of a World we live on! We have Specimens of those Sea shell Rocks broken off near the Tops of those Mountains, brought and deposited in our Library [the Library Company of Philadelphia] as Curiosities. If you have not seen the like, I'll send you a Piece. (The Papers of Benjamin Franklin [New Haven: Yale University Press: 1961], vol. 3, p. 169.) World | World Map 1790 Northern Hemisphere | Full Title: To George Washington president of the United States of America this magnetic atlas or variation chart is humbly inscribed by John Churchman.; Creator: ; Date: 1790; Publisher: Philadelphia: James Johnson: 1790; Contributor: Unattributed; Description: Color maps showing magnetic poles of the Earth.; Notes: In: Pam. 538.7:C47e. John Churchman, An explanation of the magnetic atlas or variation chart. Philadelphia: James Johnson: 1790. Front. Churchman was an American who was devoted to his own theories of the variations of the magnetic needle and other things. He had presented his scheme to the Society in 1787 and was given mild encouragement. He founded his belief on the hypothesis of two bodies (besides the moon) revolving round the earth, in small circles parallel to the equator; one near the north pole, and the other was near the south pole; and the needle, being wholly governed by the attraction of these magnetic satellites, will, in whatever part of the world, always rest in the plane of the circle, passing through them and the given place. [The American Museum, Sept. 1789: p. 218]. He persevered in his work and at the 17 September 1790 meeting his "Navigation Chart, or Magnetick Atlas" was presented. It disappeared, but another copy was given by Johann Rodolph Valltravers on 19 May 1797. The Valltravers copy is the one now at the Society. Wheat: 6; Presented by the author to the Society, 17 September 1790, with a description. Another copy presented by Johann R. Valltravers, 19 May 1797. ; Language: English; APS Digital ID: APSdigobj3477 | 1790 | APSdigobj3477 | ||
