Significance: Named after Frederick Steele, a regular Army officer who had died early in 1868, Fort Fred Steele was formally established on 30 June 1868. It was one of three posts built in Wyoming along the Union Pacific Railroad to protect the line, its workers, and the communities that had sprung up along its course. Troops from the fort participated in numerous campaigns during the Indian Wars in the 1870's and were sent to quell labor disturbances in Wyoming and at more distant points as Chicago.
