Significance: The highway is significant for its historical context, in particular its engineering in accomplishing the challenging construction, its role in local and regional economic development, its association with the National Park Approaches Act of 1931, the complex federal-state-private partnerships that enabled its authorization and construction, and its integration of landscape design elements of park development of the 1930s.
