Significance: The Wheeling area was first settled in 1769 by Colonel Ebenezer Zane. On May 4, 1836 Wheeling was incorporated as a city. During the second quarter of the nineteenth century Wheeling became the national center for nail production and the construction, in 1849, of the first suspension bridge in America further increased Wheeling's stature as a transportation and commercial center. In 1863 West Virginia's statehood was first proclaimed in Wheeling's Custom House and since the Civil War Wheeling has continued to prosper and grow.
