Significance: The Washington House was built in 1888 by Ed Heiman who was owner and manager of the hotel. At the time it was built Wausau was expanding rapidly from its early center on Third Street. The two-and-a-half story building had a saloon on the first floor with rooms on the second and third floors. In 1895 Heiman leased the management of the Washington House to another party while retaining ownership of the hotel. In 1925 the name changed to Wausau Cafe, but rooms on the upper floors continued to be rented. The Washington House never seems to have been one of Wausau's major hotels in spite of its proximity to the Third Street business district. It was not heavily advertised in newspapers or mentioned often in local histories.
