Notes
Survey number HAER OR-139
Building/structure dates: 1926 initial construction
Significance: The North Fork Butter Creek Bridge #1189, which is located in the community of Vinson on Heppner Highway in Umatilla County, was constructed in 1926. The Butter Creek Bridge is a 2-span reinforced concrete slab/beam/girder type bridge with a decorative reinforced concrete railing, featuring an arcade of segmental arches. ...By 1917, the county road passing through Vinson was considered one of the main traveled routes in Umatilla County. In 1925, local sheep rancher Pat Doherty took advantage of this situation by constructing a gas station adjacent to the highway, on the Vinson Ranch, which is located just north of the North Fork Butter Creek Bridge. The county road was later designated as the Oregon to Washington State Highway, with final surfacing and construction of bridges over Birch and Butter Creeks completed by 1927. Today, the highway is generally referred to as the Heppner Highway, which travels from the Columbia River in a southeasterly direction to Pilot Rock, and finally to Pendleton.
