Significance: The eleven Portland bridges recorded by the Willamette River Bridges Recording Project were built between 1910 and 1969, and reflect the suburban expansion of Portland across the Willamette River. Many were designed by such nationally known bridge engineers as Gustav Lindenthal, David Steiman, J.A.L. Waddell, and Ralph Modjeski and include the oldest extant vertical lift bridge in the United States and the only telescoping vertical lift bridge in the United States.
