Significance: It began as a spring-fed watering hole for Col. Adolphus D. Orcutt's cattle. Col. Orcutt's oldest son, Samuel Agustus "Gus" Orcutt, and his wife, Annie, were instrumental in developing the Swan Lake Area. Annie, who was 1/4 Cherokee Indian, and her children were allotted 800 acres surrounding the Orcutt watering hole in compliance with the Dawes Allotment Act of 1877. Orcutt Lake, as it came to be known, was a popular gathering spot for Tulsa citizens to get away from the heat of the city...
