Significance: Exemplifies architectural theories about form and use advocated by its architect George Hammond, having been designed to accommodate the region's most advanced educational ideas. It is also a late example of Hammond's work which included Cleveland's Hollenden Hotel (1885), Ohio Bell Building, Lakeside Hospital and Canton's Aultman Hospital (1891-92) and the remodeling of the Stark County Courthouse (1892-93).
