Significance: Akron Loew's Theatre, now known as The Akron Civic Theatre, is one of the eighteen remaining atmospheric theatres left in the United States. Marcus Loew enlisted architect John Eberson to design the theatre in 1929. The theatre originally housed 3,500 seats and was built primarily for Vaudeville performances. The interior of the theatre reflects characteristics of the Italian Renaissance however, the details and interior facades are designed to resemble a Moorish Castle. Projected clouds drifting across the ceiling complete the illusion of being in an elegant garden, creating a mood characteristic of all of Eberson's atmospheric theatres. Despite many economical hardships, Loew's Akron has retained the characteristics created by Eberson. Today, the 2,672 seat theatre still draws a crowd to theatrical performances and concerts of popular artists and acts.
