Significance: The building represents early ammunition manufacturing and handling activity at the arsenal and was an adjunct facility to the Broadway shops. Together the laboratory and shops comprised Watervliet's manufacturing center from 1840 until the mid-1880s when the arsenal was designated the Army's gun factory.
