Significance: The largest and most highly instrumented range of its kind, White Sands Missile Range supports missile development and test programs for the Army, Navy, Air Force, NASA and other organizations. Prior to its establishment in 1945, White Sands Missile Range was the site of the detonation of the first atomic device. The installation also played an important role in early missile development with the testing of captured German V-2 rockets and later American-made rockets.
