Significance: A mid-nineteenth century mental hospital; a prime example of the Sloan-Kirkbride collaboration which created a specialized architecture for hospitals for the insane. / Date of construction: 1854-1859. Brick. Five parallel pavilions linked together; towers; gabled roofs. Alterations -- late 19th century. Sloan is credited with 32 hospitals for the insane at his death in 1884, however, only 13 are firmly documented. The Sloan-Kirkbride hospitals are known for their functional requirements and attention to detail. The effects of this creation were widely influential both positively and negatively.
