Significance: The Lock Tender's House at "Four Locks", built in 1846, is the best preserved structure in this complex. It is distinctive in that it is one of the largest remaining two story brick houses along the canal. Others along the canal are of stone, wood frame, or log construction. Houses of this type, usually located adjacent to each of the locks, provided living quarters for the lock tender employee and his family.
