Significance: Built in 1807, Davidge Hall is the oldest American medical building still in use. The building was financed jointly by an 1804 act of the state legislature and a series of lotteries. Total cost was 200 thousand dollars. Robert Cary Long, Senior, was the architect. Typical of its period, the building is of the Federal style, built of heavy mill construction, with notches, pegs, and bolts used as connections. Originally, the roof was shingled but it has given way to copper. Certain rooms have been remodeled into offices and first floor brick paving changed to terrazzo. Many hidden passages and closets were provided for the storage of bodies, at that time prohibited by law for use in medical demonstrations. Students transported bodies in whiskey barrels, using the rear stairs at night. These items are part of the museum on the top floor.
