Significance: St. Paul's Episcopal Church was commissioned by Miss Caroline L.W. French of Boston in memory of her father. The structure was designed by J.W. Northrup of Bridgeport, CT. The cornerstone was laid on September 5, 1901 and the church was consecrated on June 11, 1902. The building remains virtually unchanged from the time of construction and still contains the original Tiffany stained glass windows, ash wainscoting and oak furniture installed in 1902. The church is a unique example of Romanesque architecture, standing among the typical shingled houses which characterize Nantucket Island. Due to exterior masonry restoration and renovation activity, this documentation project focuses on the interior spaces and features of the church.
