Significance: Oakland, Illinois, although platted as the town of Independence in 1835, early settlers favored the name of the nearby post office that had been established in 1833 and thus decided on Oakland to simplify their correspondence. Oakland is representative of an urban type, a small market and residential center serving an agricultural area. .. The Public Square, dedicated in the original plat, remains the principal feature of the town and the center of activity....
