Significance: Bloomington is the seat of McLean County. Platted in 1831 by Jonathan Cherry, Timothy Hoblitt, and Jesse Havens, Bloomington was laid out on a rectangular grid with the center block dedicated to a public square. In 1900 a fire destroyed many of the buildings facing the square and also consumed the just completed County Courthouse. Designed by the prominent architect, Alfred H. Picquenard, the courthouse was rebuilt as before and occupies the center of the square...
