Notes
Survey number HABS HI-357-C
Building/structure dates:
1916 initial construction
National Register Number: 66000940
Significance: Facilities 1040, 1041, 1042, and 1043 are very good examples of early twentieth-century Craftsman-style architecture. The structures are distinctive for their use of materials such as local lava rock (basalt), board and batten siding, rustic wood shingle roofing, and wood flooring. Further, these structures are notable as housing that was first designed for Junior Officers but have long been the residences of the highest-ranking officers of the 14th Naval District and the Navy Yard. These four houses are also important elements of the initial Pearl Harbor base constructions, built just a few years after the two-story officers' quarters.
