Significance: Built to accommodate children from Scottdale Mills and Georgia Duck and Cordage Mills, Scottdale School typified the approach to education in southern mill villages of this period. The school added to the complete social mechanism of the mill complex. The chief social agencies were considered to be the mill, the church, the home, the Christian Association, the Welfare Department and the school for the "Poor Whites." In the context, schools were considered to be the most effective and efficient element in a successful mill village.
