Unprocessed field note material exists for this structure (FN-1).
Building/structure dates: 1853 initial construction
National Register Number: 76000610
Significance: The Central of Georgia Railway: Savannah Repair Shops are significant because they represent the major site component of one of the earliest attempts in the United States to plan and develop a wholly comprehensive and integrated railroad repair, administration, passenger and freight facility at a single site. The shops were designated a National Historic Landmark on June 2, 1978. The Passenger-Station and Train Shed, which is part of the total site, was designated a National Historic Landmark separately on December 8, 1976, because of the special significance of the train shed. It is the oldest of the eleven known surviving long-span, trussed roof, train sheds in the United States.
