Building/structure dates: 1933
Significance: The Civilian Conservation Corps activities in the National Capitol Region of the National Park Service illustrate the important role of this program in employing out-of-work youth to create a national recreation infrastructure during the 1930s. The National Capitol Region work represents a mix of rural and urban projects indicative of CCC initiatives in metropolitan areas. While not as well-known as the rustic architecture built by the CCC for national parks in wilderness areas, the Washington-area CCC camps participated in many types of construction and tasks including parkways, picnic groves, erosion control, playgrounds, athletic fields, historical restorations, and Recreational Demonstration Area camping facilities. Many of these projects formed the basis for later expansion of recreational amenities in the National Capitol Region.
