Notes
Survey number HAER CT-148
Significance: Grand Street Bridge is significant as an example of a bascule bridge, a technology that saw substantial innovation and development in the early 1900s. This specific form, the Strauss Underneath Counterweight type, was one of the period's major bascule designs. The bridge was built in response to the tremendous industrial expansion that occurred in Bridgeport during World War I. It improved both street-level and river access to the Bridgeport Brass Company, the former plant of which occupies the west bank of the river.
