Building/structure dates: 1882 initial construction
Building/structure dates: 1941 subsequent work
Significance: A remnant of the American House Hotel, an "instant" hostelry created in 1880 in the first months after St. Elmo's founding by E.P. Whitney, former hotel proprietor from Maine. The American House became the principal hotel of St. Elmo's first boom, necessitating a two-bay addition by Whitney within two years after erecting the original section.
