Survey number HABS CO-135
Building/structure dates: 1885 initial construction
Significance: A well-preserved example of a two-story log cabin of the 1880's decade--unusual in the mountain mining camps, in which most early buildings, both residential and commercial, were one to 1 1/2 stories. Also illustrates the construction materials most often used in the 1880's log cabins; log walls, board and batten gables, and planks for window and door jambs, heads, and sills. The saddle notching also was characteristic of the 1880's cabins. The use of a gable end for the front elevation is another trademark of the St. Elmo cabins.
