Building/structure dates: 1881 initial construction
Significance: The cabin illustrates the practice of some miners to erect cabins on public land outside the St. Elmo townsite. The land belonged to the U.S. Government; the house to the builder, usually under lease arrangement. Hyman appears to have built several of these public land cabins, probably for rental. Another is the Hyman-Gill House. The cabin itself is the only cabin outside the townsite retaining its integrity.
