Significance: The Alpine Tunnel was constructed between January 1880 and December 1881 for the Denver Southpark and Pacific Narrow Guage Railroad. The 17,717' tunnel, 11,612 feet above sea level, was the first to cross the continental divide. Glacially fractured granite at the east entrance, required a 100' lining of pine and spruce. 1,572 feet of the interior required a lining of 400,000 board feet of California redwood...
