Significance: The Esquire Theater, built in 1940, was designed by William B. David, a prominent theater architect in northern California. It was owned by Blumenfeld Theater Circuit, a once thriving theater venture that ran several theaters in Sacramento and throughout the bay area. The integrity of the Moderne styling and materials of the front facade with marquee, grand entry lobby, tower and sign make this theater a representative example of popular theater style of the late 1930s and early 1940s. The Esquire is one of the very few remaining examples of the pre-1950s commercial architecture that once dominated the streetscape of K Street's 1200 block.
