Significance: Carl's Market is one of a series of "supermarkets" designed by Morgan, Walls & Clements. Essentially all of these were utilitarian sheds with a sculptural sign/street facade. With a few exceptions, all of these in the Los Angeles area have been updated as visual fashions have changed. The facade of Carl's Market is essentially unaltered, although the original graphics and color have now been changed. The two end pylons are sculptured as unfurling fronds, an often repeated decorative motif of the Zigzag Moderne, here carried over into the early Streamline era.
