Significance: Building 39 was constructed in 1940 and remodeled sometime between 1954 and 1958. It was originally built as a materials conservation (recycling) facility and was later adapted and used as an office building and storage facility.1 It was moved around 1955 from its original location just south of Building 1 and remodeled when Building 6 was being constructed. Building 39 was continually used until 1999 when the Downey plant was closed.Building 39 was significant during the World War II aircraft design and construction Industry under Vultee and later under Convair. It continued to be in use through the missile research and development stage of the plant, Apollo program, Space Shuttle program, and up until the plant was closed in 1999.1 National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
